An Ibanez serial number can tell you two things, year of manufacture and factory [or country] of manufacture. There is no master list to correlate to a model number, these are consecutive serialized numbers only.
Can someone explain to me how to understand an ibanez's manufacture location, guitar model, etc. I also have and RG550 with the number F9711931, and curious as to what it means last 4 numbers are the # it rolled off the line.
First number is year, since yours has 7 numbers, that means it was made from 1997-present.
Based in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, Hoshino Gakki were one of the first Japanese musical instrument companies to gain a significant foothold in import guitar sales in the United States and Europe, as well as the first brand of guitars to mass-produce the seven-string guitar and eight-string guitar.
Ibanez manufactures effects, accessories, amps, and instruments in Japan, China, Indonesia and in the USA (at a Los Angeles-based custom shop).
The Ibanez brand name dates back to 1929 when Hoshino Gakki began importing Salvador Ibáñez guitars from Spain.
After Telésforo Julve bought the company in 1933, Hoshino Gakki decided to make Spanish acoustic guitars in 1935, at first using the "Ibanez Salvador" brand name, and then later using the "Ibanez" brand name.Serial numbers can be useful in determining the age of a guitar as well as in which country and by which builder it was produced.Unfortunately, there is no single unified format used for Ibanez serial numbers.;) This page is for dating Ibanez guitars built in Japan only.See the Factories heading a few paragraphs down for little info on guitars produced elsewhere.Ibanez did not put serial numbers on their guitars. The only way to date these guitars is to find out what years they were available and then comparing all the minute details like scripts, contours, and inlay variances that only the hardcore vintage gurus know.
